Metropol Cinema: The Story
Documentary

Client & Challenge
Kino Metropol is a unique venue with soul — a cultural beacon in Olomouc since 1933. Unlike commercial multiplexes, Metropol has preserved the charm of a classic cinema, offering a spacious hall, an authentic atmosphere, and a carefully curated selection of films. It’s a space where cinema is not just entertainment, but an experience, a meeting point, and a source of inspiration.
Following a recent renovation, Kino Metropol has transformed into a modern yet intimate cultural space that blends historical character with contemporary technologies. What has remained is the most important aspect — a deep connection with its audience, a passion for film, and a drive to bring not only premieres but also festivals, discussions, and unique experiences to the city.
In 2023, the cinema approached us with a request to create a video to accompany the celebration of its 90th anniversary.
Our Solution
Instead of creating a traditional promo video or report, we chose to produce a short documentary that captures the story of Kino Metropol from its founding to the present day. The film looks not only at the history of the building but also at the lives of the people closely connected to the cinema. It features interviews with a longtime projectionist who remembers the golden age of Olomouc cinemas, both the former and current directors of Metropol, and prominent figures from the local cultural scene.
More Than Just a Commercial Video
From the very beginning, we felt this project had a deeper meaning. Olomouc has a rich and vibrant cinema history, and Kino Metropol is a vital part of it. That’s why we decided not to follow the path of a typical promotional video, but to create a documentary that offers not only a visual insight into the cinema's operation, but also a broader context and authentic human stories.
Result
The result was a 20-minute documentary that premiered in 2023 as part of Kino Metropol's 90th anniversary celebrations. The film received positive feedback from both audiences and cultural professionals, becoming a fitting tribute to this important milestone.
Two years later, the cinema’s management decided not to let the documentary remain tucked away. They approached us again to create a shorter version that could reach a broader audience. This shortened cut now serves as an opening piece before summer open-air screenings and is also used in Kino Metropol’s online communication on social media.
